Autodesk releases the 2027 family
At ARKANCE, we help customers turn this shift into a practical advantage by guiding teams in adopting new technologies, integrating them into existing workflows, and unlocking measurable business value. As your technology partner, we ensure innovation translates into real outcomes.
As part of its regular release cycle, Autodesk has introduced the 2027 versions of its core CAD, BIM, and CDE solutions. This release represents more than an annual update.
The Autodesk 2027 product family marks a significant evolution, moving from AI-assisted features to more advanced, context-aware AI embedded directly into design and construction workflows. AutoCAD 2027, Revit 2027, Civil 3D 2027, and the expanding Autodesk Forma ecosystem now share a unified and secure AI foundation called Autodesk Assistant. This capability is designed to better understand project data, geometry, and user intent, enabling more natural and intuitive interaction with software.
“This is the first time we see AI not as a feature, but as a teammate,” an infrastructure customer told us during our implementation project.
For CAD and BIM professionals, this release introduces a new way of working where AI supports faster decisions, improves data quality, and enables greater automation across connected workflows.
Rather than focusing only on individual features, Autodesk family 2027 enables continuous capability expansion and "unlimited" number of new AI-based features. With the right approach, teams can work more efficiently, consistently, and at greater scale.
AutoCAD 2027: Productivity Reimagined with Agentic AI
AutoCAD Assistant: Your Geometry Aware AI Partner
AutoCAD 2027 introduces AutoCAD Assistant, a multimodal AI agent that understands DWG geometry, drawing standards, and natural language instructions, including local languages. You can type the prompts, or use voice prompts.
What this enables:
Automate audits using prompts like "Find dimensions with overriden values", List nonstandard object settings", or "Check this drawing for layer violations"
Explore geometry using conversational prompts
Create reports on standards, object usage, or drawing health
Save and share prompt libraries across teams to standardise QA workflows
This introduces true agentic behaviour in AutoCAD, where the Assistant can reason about geometry and support task execution, not just suggest commands.
ARKANCE supports teams in structuring and scaling these capabilities by developing prompt libraries, aligning them with company standards, and training users to achieve consistent, high-quality outcomes across projects.
Checkout: MultiUser Editing for DWG
When drawings are stored in Forma Data Management, multiple users can now work on the same DWG simultaneously.
Users “check out” specific portions of a drawing
Teams continue working in parallel
AutoCAD manages conflict resolution and merging changes
This brings DWG collaboration closer to BIM-style worksharing, helping distributed teams collaborate more effectively. (Not available in AutoCAD LT.)
Geometry Cleanup: Automated Drawing Quality
AutoCAD 2027 introduces a new Geometry Cleanup engine that detects and resolves common drafting inconsistencies such as:
Gaps
Overshoots / undershoots
Misaligned angles
Other geometry inconsistencies
This reduces hours of manual cleanup effort, particularly for civil, survey, and legacy DWG workflows. During onboarding, we help teams automate cleanup routines and integrate them into QA workflows.
Forma Data Management Essentials Included
Every AutoCAD subscription now includes Forma Data Management Essentials, providing a cloud-based CDE for:
Version control
Access management
2D and 3D viewing
Desktop synchronisation
Issue tracking
Team collaboration
This introduces a built-in, Autodesk-supported CDE for DWG projects. without extra licensing.
ARKANCE helps organisations assess how to structure and deploy this environment effectively, ensuring alignment with project requirements and long-term scalability.
Connected References & Shared Customisation
Teams can now centrally manage:
Xref re-paths
Tool palettes
CUI menus and ribbons
These elements can be shared across Forma projects, supporting consistent standards and improving collaboration across teams.
Performance and Functional Updates
Hardware-accelerated Realistic visual style enabled by default
Faster layout switching
“Push to Docs” becomes Push to Forma for unified cloud workflows
Legacy PSOUT and MrSID support removed
Full support for Windows 11 and latest macOS
ARKANCE complements these capabilities with Be.Smart solutions that extend automation, standardisation, and productivity further.

Autodesk Forma: The New Unified Industry Cloud
Autodesk is bringing Autodesk Construction Cloud and Autodesk Forma together into a unified, AI-driven industry cloud. This evolution consolidates capabilities while maintaining continuity for existing users.
For many organisations, this simplifies how cloud solutions are structured and adopted across design, BIM, and construction workflows.

Forma Data Management Essentials
The popular CDE tool Autodesk Forma Data Management (AFDM, formerly Autodesk Docs) is now included in all AutoCAD, Revit and Civil 3D subscriptions in a slightly limited version, AFDM Essentials. The Essentials tier provides:
Document management
Versioning
Access rights
2D/3D viewing
Desktop authoring integration
Issue tracking
Forma Board
Missing from Essentials (available in full version):
API access
ISO 19650 workflows
Transmittals
Mobile access
Advanced BIM insights
This significantly expands access to Autodesk’s CDE across the industry. With AFDM Essentials, we can now implement a unified environment for both CAD and BIM teams without additional licensing. Many customers have asked for such simple, Autodesk supported CDE for DWG workflows.
ARKANCE helps organisations determine when Essentials is sufficient and when a full CDE implementation is required for compliance, automation, or integration.
Revit 2027: AI-Connected BIM (Preview)
Based on public roadmaps and Autodesk previews, Revit 2027 is expected to focus on:
Deeper integration with Forma for bidirectional design updates
AI-powered modelling assistance
LOD 200/300 automation from early stage to detailed design
Enhanced analysis workflows connected to cloud services
Performance improvements for large models
This continues the shift toward cloud-connected BIM environments, enhanced by agentic AI support.
ARKANCE supports customers in preparing for these changes by aligning BIM strategies, workflows, and training with emerging capabilities.
Civil 3D 2027: Coming Soon
Autodesk has confirmed that Civil 3D 2027 will follow a similar AI-driven direction, including:
Geometry-aware AI for corridor, surface, and alignment tasks
Cloud-connected data management through Forma
Improved performance for large datasets
Enhanced collaboration workflows similar to AutoCAD Checkout
ARKANCE helps civil teams standardise templates, automate QA processes, and integrate cloud workflows to improve consistency and performance. More details will be released in the coming weeks.
Why the 2027 Family Matters
1. AI that understands geometry
This is not generic AI. Autodesk Assistant is trained on CAD/BIM logic, DWG structure, and geometry relationships you can use in your prompts.
2. A unified cloud backbone
Forma connects design, BIM, and construction workflows in a single industry cloud.
3. Improved collaboration
DWG worksharing, shared palettes, and built-in CDE access reduce coordination overhead.
4. Automation that saves real hours
Geometry Cleanup, AI-driven audits and automated modelling workflows, improve efficiency and accelerate production.
5. Greater consistency across teams
Shared standards, shared prompts, and data environments reduce rework and improve quality.
These benefits are realised most effectively when supported by the right standards, training, and implementation approach. ARKANCE helps accelerate this adoption across organisations.
Conclusion: The 2027 Release is a Shift in How Teams Work
The Autodesk 2027 AEC family represents a shift in how teams interact with technology. Agentic AI, connected cloud workflows, and increased automation are reshaping how projects are delivered.
For CAD and BIM professionals, this means more time focused on design and engineering, improved collaboration, and greater confidence in project outcomes.
At ARKANCE, we help organisations turn these capabilities into measurable results through implementation, integration, training, and ongoing support. From strategy to execution, we work alongside your teams to ensure successful adoption and long-term value.
